北海道長万部町に８月15日、公式マスコットまんべくんが第二次世界大戦の（終戦）記念日に「日本の侵略戦争が全てのはじまりです」とツイートし、怒りのコメントが殺到した（majirox news 東京）。
町当局は批判に対してすぐさま距離を取り、このツイートがマスコット名義でTwitterに投稿するように依頼した民間企業によるものだと語った。
当局によると、彼らは昨年10月から無償でまんべくん名義でツイートしていた長万部で設立のウェブサイト制作会社の役員に対して処分を行ったという。
「私たちは、あまり毒舌的でない、かわいらしいキャラクターを望んでいたのです」と長万部町役場の広報担当者は言った。
まんべくん論争は８月14日、彼名義のツイートが８月15日の第二次世界大戦の終戦記念日に言及し始めたときに発生した。
最初のツイートでは、早くも他のエントリーにさきがけて「まんべくん戦争の勉強するねッ！」と言っている。「日本の犠牲者三百（十）万人。日本がアジア諸国民に与えた被害者数二千万人」、最後のツイートでは「どう見ても日本の侵略戦争が全てのはじまりです」と言った。
ツイートに対するネットの反応は迅速かつ怒りのこもったもので、電話をかけた者や電子メールは激怒して町に不満を訴え、まんべくんのメッセージは町の公式見解を反映したものかと質問した。
まんべくんは町の公式マスコットであり、Twitterアカウントでは88000人のフォロワーを抱えている。多くの人々を魅了したのは、毒舌的なツイートが他のメディアの（紹介する、この）キャラクターのゆるいイメージからかけはなれていたからだ。

TOKYO (majirox news) — The Hokkaido town of Oshamanbe was swamped with outraged comments Aug. 15 after a tweet in the name of its official mascot Manbe-kun to mark the anniversary of World War II did so by saying “Japan’s war of aggression started everything.”
Town officials were quick to distance themselves in the wake of criticism, saying the tweet had been made by a private company commissioned to make posts on the Twitter microblogging service in the mascot’s name.
Officials said they have reprimanded the Oshamanbe-born website production company executive who has made the tweets in Manbe-kun’s name free of charge since October last year.
“We wanted a character that was cute, not one that’s so sharp-tongued,” an Oshamanbe Municipal Government spokesman said.
Manbe-kun’s controversy started Aug. 14 when tweets in his name began referring to the Aug. 15 anniversary of the end of World War II.
“Let’s study ‘Manbe-kun’s War,” the first tweet said, before going on quickly to another entry. “Three million Japanese died. Japan caused 20 million casualties through Asia.” A final tweet said: “No matter how you look at it, Japan’s war of aggression started everything.”
Online response to the tweets was rapid and furious as irate callers and e-mail complained to the town and asked if Manbe-kun’s messages represented the official view of the town.
Manbe-kun is the town’s official mascot and the Twitter account has about 88,000 followers, attracting many because the sharp-tongued tweets are distant from the character’s soft image in other media.
Manbe-kun’s Twitter operator has been admonished in the past and forced to apologize after criticizing an entertainer.
